KLANG: Residents here have given the thumbs up to a series of seminars organised by Wanita MCA to explain hudud and its implications if enforced in the country.
Fruit seller Eng Hock Siew, 47, said the initiative would benefit those who did not have much access to reading materials.
“I think what MCA is doing will have a positive impact for people to get a clearer picture of the issue,” he said, adding that such a move was important to everyone in the country, regardless of age and race.
M. Moorthy, a 34-year-old lorry driver, referred to hudud as an ancient law.
“Since it is a law that only a handful of countries are following, I believe MCA is doing the right thing by explaining to the people what it is all about,” he said.
A kuih seller, who only wanted to be known as Zack, also praised MCA for organising the seminars.
“I have been talking to my friends and most of them are against hudud.
“It is because we know what the punishments are like for offences that are not so serious. We think it is wrong to implement the law and bring the nation backwards,” he said.
On Sunday, the first leg of MCA’s seminars on hudud took off with dozens of residents attending the Chinese language session.
The event is part of a package of 26 seminars scheduled to be held nationwide.
Wanita MCA chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie had said speakers at the seminar would include law experts and members of non-governmental organisations.
She added that top PAS, DAP and PKR leaders and elected representatives would be invited to attend the seminars.
